The press group Capital.gr published (in Greek) an article of Dr. Kouzelis, the Managing Partner of Intellex, on patents and compulsory licensing related to Covid-19. After a short introduction on patents and how the patent holder can fix a price-tag on a product, the article explains the term “Compulsory Licensing”, and how this can be applied to Covid-19 related inventions (vaccines, medicament, tests…). It gives the example of Israel and Germany and finally draws the attention to the difficulty to strike the right balance between public health and private interests. Certainly, public health takes precedence, nevertheless we should not destroy the patent system, which finances R&D and technological progress.
