Patenting in Greece, one more missed opportunity
(published in Kathimerini daily newspaper)
The ecosystem of patenting in Greece is at a very low level, compared with the other Eurozone states: There are few patents filed, mostly they are of low quality, very few survive after examination.
The reasons of the very low patent activity are multiple and the most important a. the low performance of OBI, the Greek Patent Office, b. the lack of Patent Attorneys (there is no national qualification and there is a handful of European Patent Attorneys) and c. the insistence of the Greek state to archaic procedures, such as providing translations in patents validated in Greece.
Courageous political initiatives and a change of culture have to take place.
